From its iconic architecture, timber staircases and intricate galleried departments to an ever-evolving collection of fashion, homeware, accessories and stationery, Liberty London is always a source of inspiration and delight.
With an enduring reputation for colourful textiles, this chic department store has been setting the benchmark in creative home décor since its inception in 1875. Founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the shop quickly became one of the most fashionable destinations in the city, known for its strong connections with Pre-Raphaelite artists, the leaders of the Art Noveau movement, plus arts and crafts pioneers, such as William Morris and John Ruskin. Its founder had a dream of creating an Eastern Bazaar in the metropolis, and to that end, his collection of ornaments, fabrics and objects d’art from the Far East, plus a host of imported antiques, soon captured the imagination of curious shoppers.
Today, the store is housed in a Grade II-listed, iconic Tudor-revival property, built in 1924. It’s constructed with the timbers of two ships, HMS Hindustan and HMS Impregnable. Liberty London continues to champion eclectic design, maintaining its long tradition of in-house collaborations with designers to produce exclusive, covetable fashion and accessories.
Recently, its expansive home department has been treated to a host of new collections as well as a thoughtful rejuvenation, courtesy of a colour palette of heritage greens and deep blues. The store’s own-brand prints achieved a cult-like status in the 1950s and 1960s and its fabrics still remain unrivalled. The latest range, English Eccentrics, offers a modern twist on prized archive classics.
